Located at the western end of picturesque Lake Ontario, the beautiful port city of Hamilton is frequently considered part of the Greater Toronto Area. Hamilton enjoys a strong economic environment with manufacturing, specifically steel, an important industry. Nowadays, gentrification has taken hold with young couples priced out of the Toronto real estate market taking a new look at the city. Commuters find that Hamilton is connected to Toronto via the Queen Elizabeth Way superhighway and a new GTO train station. While Hamilton still holds true to its industrial roots, the revitalized downtown area now offers cafes and galleries as well as trendy new restaurants and shops in the old storefronts. A diverse population makes the Hamilton the ideal setting for film and television productions, and there is an ever increasing art scene.

The long history of Hamilton began after the War of 1812 when George Hamilton purchased the Durand Farm. The population in the area expanded when Loyalist arrived in the years after the American Revolution. This vibrant city of over half a million people is considered the ninth largest metropolitan area in Canada and the third largest in the province of Ontario. New residents are attracted to welcoming Hamilton from other towns within Canada and from countries worldwide, resulting in a cosmopolitan mix with an estimated 20 percent of Hamilton residents born outside of the country.

The city of Hamilton recognizes that attractions and cultural options make the city a wonderful place to live. There is a Public Art Cal for Artists who want to display their creations in public places, as well as a multitude of galleries and festivals throughout the year. Hamilton is home to popular attractions including the Royal Botanical Gardens, as well as numerous performing arts, music venues and theater. Three regulation 18-hole golf courses are open to the public, the Beddoe Course and the Martin Golf Course at Chedoke, and the King’s Forest Golf Course.

Astonishing natural beauty is a highlight of the city of Hamilton. Residents thrill to the numerous dramatic waterfalls, lookouts from the escarpment and deep forests that are all only minutes away from the vibrant downtown. There are activities and restaurants on the beach including waterside Adventure Village offering outdoor as well as indoor facilities. Hamilton is home to eight beautiful hiking and biking trails that lead through cliffs, caves, beaches and forests. Confederation Park is a 93-hectare fun-filled space on the lake with go-karts, batting cages, miniature golf and more designed for family enjoyment.

The popular Royal Botanical Gardens makes its home in Hamilton, as well as the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. The city’s focus on football can be seen with the Canadian Football Hall of Fame located in the heart of downtown right near city hall, and the Tiger-Cats play at Ivor Wynne Stadium across town. There is a re-enactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek at the National Historic Site of Battlefield House Museum & Park, a 19th century homestead that belonged to the Gage family, the first weekend of June every year. Hamilton is home to McMaster University and Mohawk College.

Spectacular natural beauty, a prime lakeside location, easy access to Toronto via the GEW and the GTO commuter train, a growing arts scene and multitude of amenities make Hamilton the perfect place for young families, professionals and retirees looking to make a new life in an affordable area.
